Plans for a preschool in the lodge at the centre of Wandsworth Common could cause a "nightmare scenario" and "daily gridlock" according to a residents' association.

Smart Preschools, which currently runs the Wimbledon Hill preschool in Leopold Road, has applied to turn Neal's Lodge and Cottage into the Wandsworth Common preschool for children aged two to five.

Wandsworth Times:

The application has been met with objections by those who live in the "Toastrack", a series of five parallel roads and two perpendicular, which are the closest point of access to the lodge.

Toastrack residents believe their streets will be overrun in the mornings and evenings as parents park to drop off and pick up their children.

Graham Kane, who lives in Routh Road, said: "The nearest points of access are in the "toastrack" streets where parking is already oversubscribed.

"The restrictions would not cover the periods of dropping off or collecting. I am concerned that due process has not been followed as the traffic assessment appears to have been carried out by the applicants and does not cover the most affected streets.

"The conflict of interest is self evident and as a bare minimum should be independently carried out by the council."

The roads with closest access points to the common include Dorlcote Road, Henderson Road, Nicosia Road, Patten Road and Baskerville Road.

Two of the roads use a one-way system and all have parking restrictions in place.

The lodge is 0.6 miles from Wandsworth Common station.

The pre-school would have spaces for up to 62 children with 15 members of staff and would be open from 7.30am to 6.30pm with additional activities running on weekends too, such as birthday parties, according to demand.

According to the applcation, the pre-school is focussed on outdoor learning as much as possible, using the Scandinavian teaching philosophy.

The application requests permission for eight parking spaces, two motorcycle spaces and capacity for 10 bicycles.

Neal's lodge is officially classed as a residential property, and is home to the Skylark cafe downstairs, with a nature centre next door. Smart preschools was one of nine companies of a similar nature to submit applications for the lodge and won their bid in September.
