A garage in Tooting Bec has sold for £208,000 at auction - the same price as some family homes.

The property, on Streathbourne Road, was originally given a guide price of £48,000 but took more than four times that in the December 15 auction at Andrews and Robertson.

Wandsworth Times:

The listing reveals the property was situated in a "sought after" residential area near Balham High Road, with public transport available from the nearby tube station.

The garage's frontage measures 10ft 7in and has been used as a single garage and for storage. The property includes a small space in front for one car.

Jeremy Lamb, director of the auction house, said: "It is a lot of money. I would be surprised if someone had bought it to keep a car or a lawnmower in it.

"We marketed it as a garage but with development potential.

"I think the price paid reflects that."

It is not the first time the auction house has sold a garage for such a high price - a 500 sq. ft. property in Southwark went for £500,000 recently.

Mr Lamb said: "You would need to get an additional storey, and the plot itself is not that big either but if you could manage to get two floors you might get a small studio.

"It is going to need to be carefully designed and will have to go through planning, so would not be straight forward at all."

For just £17,000 more, the buyer could have picked up a studio in Rectory Lane.

The garage was sold by Wandsworth Council.
