A charity which works with vulnerable families across Wandsworth has been given a cheque for nearly £2000 by the Wandsworth Guardian's parent company.

Home Start Wandsworth applied to the Gannett foundation for £1,702 to help get their cookery classes under way.

The grant was awarded to the charity, which is based in York Road, Battersea, and the money will provide vital equipment in the workshops and lessons.

Home Start manager Sue Winter said that until now, sessions have been run with volunteers bringing their own equipment.

She said: "We are going to be running these classes for families to help them with a healthier lifestyle.

"We will be running group classes and one-to-one sessions.

"This funding means it can go ahead, we had no equipment and have just been bringing our own."

The grant also means the charity can give some of the poorer families some basic cooking equipment.

Home Start Wandsworth started trials of the cookery lessons in the last few months and will run them in the Spring.
