Three days after it began, supermarket chain Tesco has flouted a ban on lorries and vans making deliveries in Putney High Street.

In a bid to reduce congestion and improve air quality, Wandsworth Council announced that HGVs and vans would be prevented from stopping to load or unload between 7am and 7pm from Monday to Saturday, from January 11.

January 8: Putney High Street exceeds harmful gas emission just eight days into the year

November 23: Vans to be banned on Putney High Street from January in bid to improve air quality

Eagle-eyed members of the Putney Society spotted a Tesco lorry unloading a delivery in front of the Putney High Street store around 2.30pm on Thursday, January 14.

A spokesman for Wandsworth Council said: "We will be raising this with Tesco and reminding them of the new rules and their corporate responsibility to support our efforts to improve traffic flow and air quality in Putney High Street."

A spokesman from Tesco said: "We do our best to be a good neighbour and have reiterated the new delivery restrictions to our depots and drivers."

The ban was announced in November, but it was revealed on January 8 that Putney High Street breached the European-wide legal ceiling on concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) for the nineteenth time since January 1.

This meant it breached the legal annual limit of NO2.
