The driver of the lorry spotted unloading in Putney High Street during banned hours was fined £130, Wandsworth Council has said.

A ban on loading and unloading in the High Street came into force on January 11, but since then, Tesco lorries have been photographed twice outside their store.

On the second occasion, Wandsworth Council fined the driver £130.

January 21: Tesco spotted for SECOND time unloading delivery during banned hours on Putney High Street

January 18: Tesco flout Putney High Street lorry loading ban within three days of enforcement

January 8: Putney High Street exceeds harmful gas emission just eight days into the year

November 23: Vans to be banned on Putney High Street from January in bid to improve air quality

Environment spokesman Councillor Jonathan Cook said: "It is extremely disappointing that our efforts to improve air quality in the high street are being so openly undermined by Tesco.

"We would certainly have expected a large company like theirs to understand the need to comply with these rules, which will not only be of benefit to the wider community but also directly benefit their own staff and customers.

"We did speak to their store manager after last week’s initial transgression and were assured it would not happen again.

"Sadly Thursday has shown this is not the case and as a result Tesco’s reputation is bound to suffer - in Putney at least."

The ban prevents HGVs and vans from stopping to load and unload between 7am and 7pm between Monday to Saturday.

It is intended to keep traffic flowing and to help reduce levels of nitrogen dioxide in the High Street.

Putney High Street exceeded the annual legal limit for nitrogen dioxide within eight days this year.
