Campaigners opposed to illuminated advertising boards in Rosslyn Park have sought legal advice and are pushing for a three month "lighting assessment" on the boards.

January 23: Campaign against Rosslyn Park screens take fight to the advertisers

Amanda Benzecry has led the Campaign Against Rosslyn Park Advertising (CARPA) after large LED display boards appeared in the grounds along Upper Richmond Road, in Roehampton.

She instructed solicitors to write to Wandsworth Council and urge a three month lighting assessment, which is one condition of advertising planning permission being granted, and does not appear to have been submitted.

The letter states: "The only sufficient measure that will mitigate the impact of the signs is for them to be switched off permanently and dismantled.

"Merely reducing the hours or level of illumination will not address the problem, which is that the signs are an unsightly and inappropriate intervention into the street scene of this sensitive area."

CARPA is prepared to take Wandsworth Council to judicial review, should the condition of a lighting assessment not be implemented.

CARPA took their fight direct to the advertisers last month, and Co-Operative Food were one of those to pull their advertising until a resolution.

A Wandsworth Council spokesman said: "The planning permission was granted in the normal way and fully in accordance with the legislation.

"There are no legal proceedings under way and we are not aware of any legal grounds that exist that would enable this group to challenge that consent."

A petition by CARPA has attracted 470 signatures. Comments include criticism that the boards are "grotesque" and in an "absurd location".

Several people claim the boards are distracting to drivers, while other say they are eco "unfriendly".
