"Cold and sleep-deprived" residents have sent Wandsworth council's housing director a Valentine's card in the hope of securing a date with him.

Residents in the Surrey Lane estate claim there have been years of delays in replacing their 40-year-old windows and that their attempts to meet with Brian Reilly, director of housing and community services in the council, have been ignored.

January 29: Wandsworth Council prepares to spend £100m in three years on housing projects

Lisa Hawkins, spokeswoman for SLPO and Surrey Lane Towers Residents Association, said: "Brian Reilly helped us get these windows started in the first place.

"Although we're thankful to him, these delays are really affecting us.

"I don't know what to tell my children when they ask when we will get our windows or they can't sleep because of the noise of the scaffolding in the wind.

"We hope Brian Reilly won't leave us asking, 'Where is the love?', but accept our Valentine's Day card and agree to meet with us."

The Surrey Lane People's Organisation (SLPO) wants a timetable from the council to finish the work and said they are worried lower quality windows will be installed.

They also claim they are sleep-deprived as "clanging scaffolding" disrupts their rest.

The estate was one of many mentioned in a planned budget of £100m for housing improvements in the next three years in the borough.

Labour Councillor Simon Hogg said: "This is a lovely idea. These residents are at the heart of the community.

"I hope council staff will agree to a date - maybe they can build a lasting relationship."

Wandsworth Council has been contacted for a comment.
