Plans for the future of the Alton Activity Centre are "half-baked", according to Labour councillors in opposition.

The current service in the Roehampton estate is run by the charity Spurgeon's, but the contract comes to an end on April 30, when the council will directly manage activities.

Spurgeon’s last week will be the first of the two-week Easter break.

A report heard by full council on Wednesday, March 9, read: "Whilst it is clear that the current contract will cease, we were advised that early discussions are under way with the intention of ensuring that the building is retained for community use, although this new provision was not intended to replicate what was previously available.

"We were informed at committee that the new provision would include play rangers and family support services. It was hoped that further services, such as baby clinics, could be added to this offer.

"Additionally, conversations were under way with a community provider, but it was necessary to first dispose of the lease before new provision could be put in place."

Parents who use the services in the Alton centre submitted a petition to the children’s services scrutiny committee and made pleas to councillors to maintain services.

Councillor Leonie Cooper called the current council position a "half-baked solution".

She said: "I support and admire the parents who are still fighting to keep the services going at this centre. They want the much-needed existing services to continue.

"These are after-school activities and care, plus well-resourced children’s holiday projects and supporting services for parents."

Wandsworth Council confirmed the centre would be open 1pm-6pm Monday Wednesday and Friday in the second week of the holidays.

A Wandsworth Council spokesman said: "The council is close to announcing new arrangements to provide a range of family friendly services, including low-cost after school care and holiday play activities at the centre."

Parents are holding a public meeting on March 21 at 6pm in the Dara club in Minstead Gardens.
