Spectators heading to the annual Oxford Cambridge Boat Race could face travel disruption because of planned engineering works between Clapham Junction and Barnes.

On Boat Race Day, March 27, stations between Clapham Junction and Barnes will be closed with rail replacement bus services offered.

Wandsworth Times:

More than 250,000 people are expected to attend the event lining the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake.

Closed stations include Putney, Chiswick, Barnes and Barnes Bridge.

The stations between Clapham Junction and Barnes will be closed from March 26 until March 29 for works to replace Fairfield Street Bridge near Wandsworth Town station.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "We are improving the railway for passengers but to do that we have to make changes to train services over Easter. From new track to new signals, this work will play an important part in increasing the reliability of the railway.

"As part of this work, we are undertaking major bridge replacement work at Wandsworth Town Station which has been planned for more than three years.

"We have been working closely with South West Trains and Transport for London to ensure spectators are aware of alternative travel arrangements so that they can continue to enjoy the boat race.

"We have also contacted the organisers of the event to make them aware of alternative travel arrangements for spectators."

The Boat Race organisers have been contacted for a comment.
