Two people have been taken to hospital after steel fell from a crane in the Nine Elms development.

London Ambulance Service and firefighters were called to the scene in Battersea at about 2pm this afternoon after reports that a quantity of steel had hit two people. 

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 2.03pm to Nine Elms Lane to reports of a person hit by a falling object.

"We sent multiple resources to the scene, including two ambulance crews, a single responder in a car and an incident response officer, alongside our hazardous area response team and London's Air Ambulance.

"We treated two patients at the scene. A man with a head injury was taken as a priority to hospital escorted by the doctor from the air ambulance.

"A woman with a hip injury was also taken to hospital."

A spokesman from Lambeth fire station said that the team did not have to assist in the incident but confirmed they were called. 

A spokesman from the London fire brigade said: "We were called at 2.26pm to Ponton Road.

"A quantity of steel had fallen approximately 30 foot from a crane.

"One man suffered head injuries and one woman suffered leg injuries."

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they had been called to the scene at 2.09pm and said the man was in his mid-30s. 

London Air Ambulance also attended.
