Wandworth's Living Streets group has backed a suggestion to extend 20mph limits across residential streets in the whole borough as a council-run consultation is under way.

The borough’s branch of the charity, which works to encourage "better streets" for people on foot, is taking information about the council’s consultation direct to parents by leafleting at school gates.

Wandsworth Council’s consultation asks people to decide whether they would like all residential roads that are not Transport for London (TfL) red routes or A or B roads, to be set at 20mph limits.

Robert Moltano, secretary of Wandsworth Living Streets, said: "Out of all 20 wards in our borough, only four of them – Bedford, Furzedown, Thamesfield and West Putney – have all local residential roads limited tonow 20mph.

"In addition, there are significant chunks of four other wards – Graveney, Nightingale, Southfields and Wandsworth Common – that are already, or are scheduled to go, 20mph.

"All the rest of the borough only has a limited number of individual streets that are 20mph. Less than a third of our streets are already 20mph."

Mr Moltano said he knows that many people are sceptical of the impact of the reduced limits, but that across the country, schemes are in place to ensure the limits are not broken.
