Sadiq Khan, the new Mayor of London, will resign his seat in the House of Commons before 5.30pm today (Monday), it has been confirmed.

The Tooting MP vowed to leave his seat to be a full time mayor when he was chosen as the Labour candidate and his win on Saturday morning means this is now to happen.

Mr Khan will write to the Chancellor of the Exchequor before the end of the day today, and ask to resign his seat.

The writ will be moved tomorrow morning (Tuesday) at 9.30am.

The by-election will be held on June 16. 

Who will replace Mr Khan in Tooting?

All eyes have been on the nomination of the Labour Party candidate and several names have already come forward.

Anyone wishing to be considered for the Labour nomination must file their intention by 10am, Tuesday May 10, with a shortlist being announced on May 11.

A shortlisted hustings plus a vote of party members is being held on May 14. 

So far, interested parties include:

Fleur Anderson, Councillor for Bedford ward on Wandsworth Council.

Simon Hogg, Councillor for Latchmere ward on Wandsworth Council and the group's deputy leader.

Dr Jayne Lim, an NHS doctor.

Jasvir Signh, a family law barrister.

Christian Wolmer, a former journalist and writer.

Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, a Councillor for Bedford ward on Wandsworth Council.

Emily Brothers, candidate for Sutton and Cheam in 2015.
