England Rugby legend Laurence Dallaglio surprised pupils in Roehampton with a visit to launch a scheme designed to help young people with autism.

Mr Dallaglio, 43, visited Priory Lodge School to launch Rugby Works, a programme run through his foundation for Priory Group schools intended to help pupils with special educational needs develop skills to "lead a fulfilling life".

Mr Dallaglio OBE, founder of the Dallaglio Foundation, said: "I have seen first-hand how the power of rugby can be transformational in behaviour, confidence and future prospects. I am passionate about the work we do and am looking forward to working with the Priory to ensure a lasting impact on the lives of young people across the country."

The former England captain's foundation uses rugby to teach teamwork, respect and discipline and provide vocational opportunities.

Lucy Wood, the school’s principal, said: "I’m really excited about this partnership. The Dallaglio Foundation offers our pupils a variety of invaluable experiences which will help them, when they leave Priory Lodge, to navigate a very competitive job market. I am especially pleased that the Foundation is already working with people like O2, Virgin Media, BT, Shell, John Lewis, Lexington Catering and Rugby World Cup 2015, so the sky is the limit.

"The Foundation’s coaches will help our pupils improve physical ability and communication skills, while the sport’s ethos of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship and the ability to bounce back will help build character and resilience. CV workshops, interview preparation, taster days and work experience will help our pupils fulfil their highest ambitions.

"I also hope this link-up brings young people to the attention of prospective employers in a different way, removing much of the uncertainty about employing individuals from this group."
