A BMW driver from Norbury has been jailed for causing the death of a pedestrian who he hit in Streatham before driving off and trying to cover the crime.

Mohammed Omar Sufi was crossing Streatham High Road on July 25 last year when he knocked down by Mohammed Islam’s white BMW 5 Series car.

Mr Sufi, 59, who lived locally area, died later in hospital.

Islam, 27, of Gibsons Hill, stayed at the scene of the crash for just 15 seconds before driving away.

The number plates on Islam’s car were changed but police traced the car to a Streatham car park, and Islam handed himself in that night.

Islam pleaded guilty at Inner London Crown Court to causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

He was jailed yesterday (May 16) for three years and seven months, and was banned from driving for four years.

Detective Sergeant Jeff Edwards, from the Met Police’s serious collision investigation unit, said: "This was a tragic case where a man lost his life whilst attempting to cross the road. Islam's driving fell below that which you would expect from someone who was driving in busy traffic.”
