An Italian bar in Battersea will be allowed to keep its red, white and green stripes until the end of the Euro 2016 championships.

Bunga Bunga, in Battersea Bridge Road, entered into the sporting spirit by painting the colours of the Italian flag on the front of the building, but it was quickly warned by Wandsworth Council that it had 28 days to repaint.

The bar and restaurant will now be allowed to keep the colours until mid-July, when the tournament ends, and the owners credited the outpouring of support from Battersea residents with the council's change of heart.

Wandsworth Times:

A spokesman for the bar said: "We are fully cooperating with Wandsworth Council and have agreed to paint the building white by middle of July and are grateful to them for giving us an extension so that we can really provide a home for Italians during Euro 2016.

"Bunga Bunga will definitely be the place place to enjoy the matches at, we have parties planned for them all.

"Thanks to everyone who has supported us and we are looking forward to another month of stripes at the venue."

The bar will be repainted all white after the tournament.

A council spokesman said: "We have had talks with the bar owners who have agreed to tone down the paintwork so it is more in keeping with the character of the Westbridge Road Conservation Area."
