More than 70 children helped to build a five star bug hotel in Furzedown Recreation Ground in Tooting.

The hotel is part of Wandsworth Council's first wildflower meadow, which was organised by the newly formed Friends of Furzedown Recreation Ground, Wandsworth Council and Enable Leisure and Culture

Wandsworth Times:

In an open day held at the ground, families added new plug plants to the mix of flowers, identifed insects and created chalk drawings of their wildlife discoveries.

Seeds were planted in the meadow in 2015 and it is now filled with ox-eye daisies, tufted vetchs, pink and white campions and wild carrots.

It is home to pollinator insects such as bumblebees, carder bees and hover flies, who will make the most of the big accommodation.

Councillor Jonathan Cook, Wandsworth Council parks spokesman, said: "The meadow is a great success and will develop year on year. It’s already buzzing with insects and a big hit with local children and nature lovers.

"This is a step away from regular green grassland or playgrounds and offers something very different to local people. We hope to find places for more wildflower meadows in our local parks."
