More than 150 newly replaced parking meters have been left out of service after a technical error.

There are 166 parking meters, representing around 14 per cent of the borough’s machines, that have been left turned off after an issue with the new cashless payment system.

Fleur Anderson, Deputy Leader of Wandsworth Labour Group, said: "Residents are getting frustrated by yet another council mistake.

"The meters use a new card payment system but the council has messed up the contract so now the parking meters have just been left with a bag over them."

Wandsworth Council has confirmed that the parking meters will be functioning in the coming days and that until they are working drivers will not be penalised.

A council spokesman said: "We’re installing brand new pay and display machines that allow motorists to use bank cards.

"Not only does this offer a more convenient way to pay, but it also reduces the amount of money lost to the public purse from thieves who target parking machines.

"Some are yet to be switched on because of technical problems down to the banks and their ability to process card payments, but we are confident these should be ironed out shortly and the machines will then become fully operational."
