After the fire began, just before 9pm, London Fire Brigade 999 operators took more than 100 emergency calls from members of the public.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 3.36am on Thursday (July 14), but crews were still at the scene damping down the fire.

Residents were last night being advised to keep doors and windows closed as a precautionary measure.

Crews from Lambeth, Brixton, Tooting, Clapham, Chelsea, Peckham and other surrounding fire stations were called to the fire at 8.51pm on Wednesday (July 13).

Wandsworth Times:

Station manager David Farr who was at the incident said: "This was a large, challenging fire and crews worked extremely hard to get it under control.

“A lot of deep seated hot spots still remain and although we are now making steady progress extinguishing those it's likely crews will remain at the scene well into Thursday morning."

There have been no reports of injuries so far.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A spokeswoman from nearby John Burns Primary School said although there was still smoke billowing from the estate, the school is operating as normal.

She said: "We can still a bit of smoke coming.

"But the children are still coming in as normal.

"It hasn't really affected us - although the footbridge has been closed. Some people didn't know about the fire until they came in this morning.

"No-one was here when it started and thankfully no-one was hurt."
