Swimmers and sunbathers will soon be able to enjoy a fitness pavilion at the Tooting Bec Lido.

Work began last week on the new pavilion, costing £900,000, which will include space for workout and exercise classes, new toilets, changing rooms and a first aid room.

There will also be a new courtyard, providing additional space for sunbathers.

The investment is made up of £150,000 Wandsworth Council money, £500,000 from the South London Swimming Club and £250,000 from Sport England.

The council’s leisure spokesman Cllr Jonathan Cook said: “This exciting project will ensure that this jewel in the crown of London’s swimming pools will offer great new health, fitness and leisure facilities.

“The plans have been drawn up with great care to make sure it fits in with the Lido’s historic setting and the wider environment of Tooting Common. I have no doubt it will add great value to this popular leisure destination.”

The pavilion will be built at the deep end of the lido and is entirely within the existing boundaries, so will not encroach on the common.
