Travellers on Tooting Common have been told they will have to leave the site or face prosecution.
Wandsworth Council has said it is working on their removal "as quickly as possible".
Six caravans appeared on Tooting Common in the early hours of Monday morning.
The people staying on the common have been served with a notice requiring them to leave in 24 hours or face prosecution and risk having their vehicles towed away.
Camping on any part of Tooting Common, without prior authorisation from the council, is a criminal offence.
A council spokesman said: “Local people can rest assured that we are taking active steps to remove this group.
Unfortunately, Tooting Common is targeted in this way almost every summer and the council has a well-rehearsed procedure for ensuring any illegally parked vehicles are move on as quickly as possible.”
