The top barrister killed in a suspected hit and run has been named as 64-year-old David Batcup.

It has been reported that Mr Batcup was leaving Law Rocks battle-of-the-bands charity event at The Bedford pub on September 13 when he was hit by a white Porsche 911 as he crossed a junction on Bedford Hill, Balham.

Emergency services were called at 10.18pm and battled for 30 minutes to revive Mr Batcup but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for Charter Chambers, where Mr Batcup worked, said: “His death is a senseless tragedy. He had so much more to give.

“He was a committed family man, devoted to his wife Janet and to his daughter Rebecca of whom he was immensely proud, especially as she begins her adult life at university.”

Mr Batcup graduated from University College London and was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 1974. He worked for over 35 years in criminal courts on high profile cases involving murder, money laundering and historic sex abuse.

His colleagues said: “He will be remembered further as a warm, modest, loyal, open and big-hearted family man.

“He had a particular strength in that he was genuinely interested in everyone he met. We shall miss him terribly.”

A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. He was bailed last night until a date in October.
