HOW donations are used to pay for services to help patients at a Watford-based hospice have been revealed.

The Peace Hospice, in Peace Drive, provides free specialist care for patients with life-limiting illnesses using funding from the public and to help show where the cash goes, they have released details of how much certain services cost.

This reveal coincides with the hospice’s Every Day Matters appeal, where they hope to raise £120,000 which will help fund the work that they provide.

For example, £2 will help pay for an hour of oxygen for a patient who is having breathing difficulties whilst £25 will pay for an hour of time from a Hospice at Home nurse.

The hospice run a number of services to provide the best care, including The InPatient Unit, which provides end of life care and rehabilitation at a cost of £4,500 per day to run.

The Starlight Centre is a day centre aimed to help improve the self-esteem of patients and costs around £200 to run for an hour.

Approximately £5 million pounds needs to be raised each year from donations to ensure staff can offer the best quality of care for their patients.
