Ambitious plans to boost commerce in Wandsworth and Putney have been voted through by local businesses.

The plans intend to enhance the town centres through an investment of over £1 million over 5 years in both Putney and Wandsworth.

The funds will be raised by a levy, collected by each local council, on businesses in the regions.

The scheme includes plans to improve the ‘brand’ of each town, extend their online presence, improve traffic and parking in the areas, and expand the number of events run each month.

The proposals, which would have the town centres become designated Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), saw 75 per cent of businesses vote in favour in Putney, and 73 per cent in Wandsworth Town.

Kim Caddy, Wandsworth council, said: “This is a great result for Wandsworth and Putney Town centres. Local businesses will now have more influence over the trading environment they know so well and will be better placed to respond to challenges and opportunities in the years ahead.

“I look forward to working with them and to seeing businesses in both areas reap the rewards as their ambitious plans come into action.”

Steve Pinto, CEO at the Wandsworth chamber of commerce, said: “Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce is delighted to see a successful outcome to Wandsworth BID ballot.

"We are strong advocates for this BID and look forward in continuing to be a strong voice for local businesses. Our aim is to ensure business interests are always at the forefront, as opportunities develop for Wandsworth Town.”
