The Metropolitan Police have launched an official inquiry into allegations of non-recent sexual abuse at football clubs in London.
Officers from the Met's sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command will oversee the inquiry and work alongside Operation Hydrant, which is the national co-ordination hub for historic child abuse investigations concerning 'persons of public prominence'.
Detective chief superintendent Ivan Balhatchet of the sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command said: "We take all the allegations we receive very seriously and they will be dealt with sensitively.
"Anyone who has been a victim of sexual abuse, whatever the circumstances, or has any relevant information should contact their local police or the NSPCC."
The police added that they would not be discussing the number of allegations or clubs involved in the investigation.
However, the national Police Chiefs' Council revealed today, December 9, that there are currently 83 potential suspects and 98 clubs involved in the inquiry.
The NSPCC has revealed that their dedicated helpline set up for victims of child sex abuse within football had received more than 860 calls in its first week.
To contact the helpline, call 0800 023 2642.
