In what is being dubbed as a “new beginning” for Mitcham Lane, Furzedown will host its first Christmas light switch-on event.

The area has experienced hardship of late with the tragic killing earlier this year of Lewis Elwin, close to the spot where the event will be held.

Mr Elwin, 20, who had been training to become an electrician at South Thames College, was knifed by a gang who ambushed him.

His family are to attend the event.

The area was also featured in a recent BBC investigation into rogue landlords and was subject to a major police crackdown earlier this year involving drugs and weapons.

Mayor of Wandsworth, Councillor Richard Field, will switch on the lights at 5:55pm after which children will process to a reception at St Alban’s church holding lanterns.

Furzedown Councillor Candida Jones said: “We hope that the regeneration of Mitcham Lane will mark a new beginning for this part of our community.

“I am delighted that so many businesses and residents have got behind the Christmas light switch on.

“It is testimony to the community spirit in Furzedown that after a difficult year for this part of the ward, so many people are supporting this regeneration project.”

It has taken three years to secure the funds to regenerate Mitcham Lane which will help to tackle challenges the area faces such as antisocial behaviour, poor housing and struggling businesses.

Once the council got behind the project, a steering group was launched involving local businesses and residents and meetings were held with architects and road planners, to design the details.

The community is now being consulted on the plans.

If residents support the regeneration, it will begin in the spring of next year when £300,000 will be available to improve pavements and roads and £150,000 will be available to improve shop fronts.
