Planning permission was granted on Tuesday (January 17) for 30 new council homes in Battersea.

The Planning Applications Committee approved the construction of 18 homes on Gideon Road, which will be a mix of houses and flats, and four flats on the same road on a site currently used for parking and storage.

A further eight flats will be built on two corners of Tyneham Close and Shirley on the Tyneham Close Estate.

The decision was taken unanimously by Labour and Conservatives, although Wandsworth Independent Alliance Councillor James Cousins voiced objections.

He said: "While residents recognise the scheme's position in a larger project they were disappointed, although not surprised, the committee didn't even consider some of their smaller and specific concerns, like privacy and overlooking, let alone thinking about the bigger issues like impact on local infrastructure, in the council's rush to over-develop every available space."

Latchmere councillor Tony Belton said there "could have been more" homes built but considered the result a "victory" for Labour.

He said: "We are proud of the fact that we have got this desperately needed social housing."

Committee chairman, Councillor Sarah McDermott, said: "These new homes all meet the usual planning requirements.

"The fact that the housing will be additional homes for council tenants was an important part of the committee’s consideration.

"We took into account all concerns raised, including sufficiency of parking spaces, and welcomed the clever use of under-utilised land."

The new homes will rehouse people in the first phases of the Winstanley and York Road estates regeneration while their current properties are demolished and their new homes are built on site.

This is part of a plan to build more than 2,000 new homes on these estates.
