Representatives from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home joined a number of animal charities to campaign for change on greyhound welfare in Westminster.

On Tuesday (January 17) the animal charity pushed for the Government to change the current Welfare of Racing Greyhounds Regulations 2010 and make it mandatory in the industry to publish welfare data relating to injury, euthanasia, rehoming or retirement figures.

Battersea's director of operations, Peter Laurie, recognised that the 2010 bill brought in "important improvements" but said there was much more to do.

He added: "This is why we were so disappointed when the Government’s review last year did not propose additional requirements to address remaining areas of concern.

"These regulations should also cover trainers' kennels, which aren't properly monitored, and yet are where greyhounds spend 95 per cent of their time.

"Battersea works closely with other greyhound welfare charities, and is an active member of the Greyhound Forum.

"As a result, we’re pleased to take in many ex-racers, who are lovely dogs and make wonderful pets in the right environment.

"As with all our residents, we’re committed to ensuring they go to the right homes with responsible new owners."

Current greyhounds searching for a home at the centre include 18-month-old ex-racer Jason who is "friendly and affectionate" with humans and other dogs and loves to "snooze the day away".

Kennelmates Blitz, 18 months, and Beauty, 4-years-old, are also looking for a home and it would be the first time either dog has ever enjoyed home comforts.
