The owner of a business beside the scene of a fatal crash witnessed the last moments of a man's life after he was hit by a mixer lorry in Battersea

Ponnukone Jeyarajah saw the victim, a man in his 70s, moments before he was hit while crossing the road with his shopping.

After the crash he rushed out to the street and saw the man trapped under the huge vehicle.

Mr Jeyarajah, owner of the post office at 575C Battersea Park Road, said: "He was under the wheel of the lorry and he was okay.

"He was waving up.

"Then he was brought to the ambulance and the next thing we knew he was dead.

"It’s terrible.

"It’s a very busy road and people are always crossing it there when there are two pedestrian crossings on either side."

Police were called to the scene at 10:28am this morning (Thursday January 26) to reports of a road traffic collision in Battersea Park Road, at the junction of Falcon Road.

London Ambulance Service treated the man at the scene but he died shortly after the crash.

London Fire Brigade also attended.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area as Battersea Park Road is closed both ways between York Road and Falcon Road and A3220 Latchmere Road and Battersea Bridge Road.

At the scene, an Metropolitan Police officer said it "could be at least two or three hours" before the roads opened again.
