A Putney primary school student has won her school a £25,000 energy makeover.

Emma Peon, 10, of Hotham Primary School, came runner-up out of 4,000 children in a Generation Green competition in which she designed a comic strip showing the benefits of smart meters.

British Gas, the competition organiser, are promoting the devices which read and send your energy usage digitally to your energy supplier.

The meters, which the Government wants rolled-out completely by 2020, come with monitors that allow people to see exactly how much energy they use in pounds and pence.

Emma’s energy-saving comic strip was judged by three judges, including Nigel Parkinson, an artist at world famous comic, The Beano.

While Nigel Parkinson said Emma’s drawing was “great”, head teacher at Hotham Sarah Martin said she was “delighted” with the outcome.

She added: “Our pupils enjoyed learning about how to save energy with smart meters and had fun using their knowledge creatively for the competition.

“Emma’s comic strip was outstanding and we’re proud that she’s won an energy makeover for our school.

“The makeover will help us to save energy every day and will inspire our pupils now and in the future to be more energy efficient.”

Just like Emma, many children in Wandsworth borough are being encouraged to think about the environment.

In January, a student at another primary school in Putney won £100 for her school to spend on air quality improvement projects when she designed an anti-pollution poster.

Emma’s school will be “transformed” with the latest energy-saving technology, including solar panels, LED lights and a new energy efficient boiler.

As well as being kinder to the environment, it could save the school up to £7,000 in bills a year.
