Children were left “shaken” when a row of railings next to a primary school came loudly crashing down during Storm Doris last week.

According to witnesses terrified screams could be heard as the bush fell while pupils were leaving Darell School in Niton Road, North Sheen on Thursday, February 23. No one was hurt.

Joesph Glass, who lives on Niton Road where the railing fell, said: "It happened at about 3.30pm. Most of the pupils had left for the day but there were still a few there.

"There was an almighty crash and then screams. I came outside and saw some parents with some very frightened looking children.

"From what I understand there were no injuries but that is luck as much as anything. If they had been outside when it happened then there is not telling what could have happened.

"There winds were very back yesterday but all this damage caused by an ivy bush is quite astonishing."

Karen Bos, headteacher at Darell Primary School, confirmed no one was hurt, and said the school resumed as normal the following day.

She said: “Luckily we seemed to have escaped some of the more serious damage experienced in other parts of the country and thankfully no one at Darell Primary and Nursery School, or the general public, were hurt as a small section of fencing blew over during Storm Doris.

“The fencing came down shortly after school and was cleared immediately. The school day resumed unaffected last Friday.”
