Hampton & Richmond Borough FC will have to replay a cup tie they won against Hanworth Villa because they fielded an ineligible player.

Middlesex FA (MFA) opened an investigation last month after it emerged the club played Jerome Federico in a February 21 Middlesex Senior Cup tie.

Hampton & Richmond Borough were informed the morning after that he had played for Hendon FC in an earlier round of the competition, meaning he was ‘cup-tied’. The club’s chairman brought it to the attention of the county FA.

It was agreed the administrative error would mean the semi-final tie would have to be replayed. It will be played at Hanworth Villa, with Hampton & Richmond Borough bearing the costs for the match and forfeiting their call on gate receipts.

Hampton & Richmond Borough were fined the maximum fine permitted by the Cup Rules of £100. Further details of the arrangements for the replayed match will be announced as soon as known.

Peter Clayton, MFA chief executive said: “This was a very unusual situation but not unique in the Senior Challenge Cup for there was a similar situation some ten years ago when Yeading FC were ordered to replay one of their ties after having played a player who was ineligible – ironically that time it was against Hampton & Richmond Borough.”
