Vandals have scorched at least five cars in spate of arson attacks around Bookham and Effingham in the last two months.

The most recent attack came late on Monday night (March 13) when firefighters were called to a burning car near King George V Playing Fields in Guildford Road, Effingham.

Firefighters from Leatherhead fire station had to wear breathing apparatus to approach the car and extinguish the blaze, after being called at 10.50pm.

Fire investigation officers believe the fire was started deliberately, and alerted Surrey Police.

The force is also investigating four other car fires after being tipped off by Surrey Fire and Rescue.

A Mercedes and a Peugeot were burnt near Bookham Industrial Estate off Church Road just before 11pm on Sunday, February 5, and a Renault hatchback was set alight nearby in Church Road, Great Bookham at about 10.40pm on Sunday, February 12.

Another car – unidentifiable due to fire damage – was also scorched in Chalk Pit Lane, Little Bookham, just before 10.25pm on Wednesday, March 8.
