Wandsworth Liberal Democrats have announced their three candidates should the snap general election proposed by Theresa May go ahead.

Ryan Mercer for Putney, Alex Glassbrook for Tooting and Richard Davis for Battersea will be campaigning for parliamentary seats against Justine Greening, Rosena Allin-Khan and Jane Ellison respectively.

On behalf of the Lib Dems Richard Davis said: "This is our chance to change the direction our country is heading in. Only the Lib Dems are opposed to the Tories' hard Brexit and leaving the single market.

"Only the Lib Dems are working to protect the rights of our neighbours, friends and colleagues from across the EU.

"The Lib Dems are a party of the centre who want to represent all Wandsworth residents."

He added that Wandsworth voted 75 per cent remain and that their membership has “shot up” as a result of the Brexit vote.

He said: “Every minute from now until the General Election we will be rallying support to listen to Wandsworth residents and consolidate our votes for the Lib Dems."

Prime Minister Theresa May announced today (April 18) that she is seeking a general election on June 8.

She has challenged opposition parties to provide an alternative to the Government’s plans for Brexit.

Mrs May said it was "with reluctance" she made the decision but that "the country is coming together but Westminster is not".

She said: "I have concluded the only way to guarantee certainty and security for years ahead is to hold this election."

She accused other political parties of "game playing", saying this risks "our ability to make a success of Brexit and it will cause damaging uncertainty and instability to the country".

The House of Commons will vote for a general election tomorrow (April 19).
