Detective Inspector Will Reynolds from the Homicide and Major Crime Command has appealed to the public for witnesses to a fatal stabbing in Tooting last year.

In an interview, DI Reynolds focused on three appeal points to help find those responsible for the murder of Lewis Elwin, a 20-year-old who was stabbed to death in Tooting on April 18, 2016.

The fatal stabbing happened near Penwortham Primary School between 3.36pm and 3.40pm and he urged parents that were picking up their children at the time to come forward if they had seen anything.

Detectives are “convinced” the murderer came to the scene in a silver Peugeot.

He said: “My appeal for today is for people who would know who was driving that car, who was in that car, where it was during the day and where it went afterwards.”

The Metropolitan Police is also offering a £20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest, identification and conviction of those responsible for the murder.

DI Reynolds said: “We are just short of finding that crucial piece of evidence that might help us solve this crime and bring some sort of justice to Lewis’s family.”

The motive for the murder remains unclear but detectives believe it was a “spontaneous attack” as they do not think anyone knew Lewis would be in the area at the time.

Background:

Police were called on Monday April 18, 2016, to Penwortham Road where Lewis had collapsed in the road after being stabbed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives have CCTV footage of a suspect vehicle (registration KP03 ZTD) in the area at the time. The silver Peugeot 307 was found burnt out later that day in Putney Park Lane.

They have released an image of the car when it was advertised for sale on a website- it was sold to a new owner a few weeks before the murder on March 9.

Wandsworth Times:

Lewis was seen walking towards Mitcham Lane at around 3.30pm after being dropped off by his mother. While he was on Moyser Road, he called a friend at 3.36 and arranged to meet.

The attack happened minutes after the phone call and Lewis was seen struggling to run along Penwortham Road from the direction of Moyser Road. He collapsed at 3.41pm and an ambulance was called.

The post-mortem showed cause of death was a stab wound to the heart.

Two 19-year-old men arrested on suspicion of murder in May and subsequently bailed were informed they would not be proceeded with at the end of March this year.
