A new stretch of Thames Riverwalk is taking shape in Nine Elms as more of the old industrial South Bank is opened to the public.

Led by Wandsworth Council and funded by private development, the project involves around 500 metres of waterfront along Nine Elms Lane between Heathwall Pumping Station in the west and the new Riverside Gardens ‘pocket park’ in the east.

Riverside Gardens has undergone extensive replanting in time for this year’s Chelsea Fringe festival and is blossoming with colourful perennials, such as Allium, Artemisia, Crocossmia lucifer, Peony, Carex, Calamagrostis and Salvia.

The new seating along the walk way allows visitors to relax and enjoy a view of the Thames.

West of the Gardens a new pavilion, designed by Studio Weave and incorporating artwork by textile designer Linda Florence, is being built close to Bourne Valley Wharf.

Over the next 10 years almost the entire stretch of the Thames river path from Battersea Park to the Albert Embankment will be renewed for the public with homes, pubs, shops and cultural venues.

The long term goal is to create a joined up, green and walkable route along the Nine Elms and Vauxhall riverside, lined with new parks and attractive public squares.
