A python has been found abandoned in Battersea Park.

Wandsworth parks police were patrolling when they found a crowd of people who had spotted the snake at the Wilderness, near Rosary Gate on June 12.

A royal python, also known as a ball python, is a non-venomous constrictor and a popular choice of pet in the snake world. It is small- for a python- and typically docile.

Parks police brought the reptile to Putney Animal Hospital where it is being looked after until its owner is found.

If this proves impossible, the RSPCA will move the snake to a reptile centre for rehoming.

Jess Bickerstafft, hospital assistant at Putney Animal Hospital, said the RSPCA is sadly experiencing “widespread neglect of reptiles” and are finding more and more in their care.

She said: “Although these beautiful animals may look quite hardy, snakes kept as pets are actually completely dependent on their owners.

“They need them to provide them with the correct accommodation, heating, lighting and food, all of which must replicate their wild habitat as closely as possible to keep them healthy and allow them to carry out their natural behaviour.”

While this particular snake was three foot long, the species can reach up to six foot in length.

If anybody has an information as to who owns the snake or how it came to be dumped they can call the inspector's appeal line number on 0300 123 8018.
