Three of Wandsworth’s community gardens will open their doors to visitors this weekend as part of Open Garden Squares Weekend.

Open Garden Squares, a London-wide event, gives people an opportunity to see gardens that are usually closed to the public.

Bramford Community Garden, Wendelsworth Community Garden and the Orchard and Paradise Co-op Urban Farm are taking part in Wandsworth.

Visitors can learn about growing fruit and vet, composting and other organising gardening techniques, plus information on how they engage with young people and connect them to nature.

Two schools in the borough are taking part too - Linden Lodge for visually impaired children in Southfields will show people what it’s like being guided through the garden wearing a blindfold, and Sellincourt Primary School in Tooting will be showing how art and poetry meet gardening to help children’s learning.

Wandsworth Council’s environmental spokesman Jonathan Cook said: “Open Garden Squares weekend is a great opportunity to see behind the scenes of some of the borough’s hidden treasures.

“We are always interested in hearing from any of residents interested in setting up a community garden and funding for environmental projects, including community gardens and composting and reuse schemes may also be available through the Wandsworth Grant Fund.”
