Furzedown’s annual community event Big Day Out is back this Saturday and promises to be bigger than ever.

The event, which attracts thousands of people every year, will feature a range of activities for children, a live music stage, food and bar stalls, craft, community and activity stalls.

Along with that, a variety of new activities will be on offer, including tai chi, korfball, skateboarding and African drumming.

In keeping with the theme of this year’s event, Furzedown-On-Sea, there will be donkey rides and a Punch and Judy show.

Councillor Candida Jones, who will be helping out with the donkey rides, said the event is the “absolute highlight” of her year.

She said: “The community spirit in Furzedown is legendary and the Big Day Out is the perfect expression of it – entrance is free, all activities and stalls are inexpensive and every part of our fantastic community is represented.

“This year I am especially looking forward to seeing my fellow councillor, Andy Gibbons, and local MP, Rosena Allin-Khan, take to the big stage as part of the musical acts”.

Dawn Thomas, who organises the Big Day Out, said: “Wandsworth Council has been very supportive yet again this year.

“We are pleased to say that the roads around the Rec will be closed off to traffic, and the bowling green next to the rec will, for the first time, be part of the day’s activities.

“The weather looks set to be fantastic so I’m confident this year’s event really will be bigger, more varied and more fun than ever before”.

The Big Day Out, organised by the Furzedown Community Network (FCN), will be held on Furzedown Rec, from midday til 8pm on Saturday, June 17.
