A man is fighting for his life after being struck by a suspected stolen car.

Shortly before 1.15pm yesterday (July 20), police in a marked car tried to stop a suspected stolen vehicle in Stormont Road but failed to do so and the car ploughed into a pedestrian in Clapham Common North Side at the junction of Forth Bridge Road.

The 26-year-old victim is in “critical condition” at a south London Hospital. His next of kin have been informed.

After hitting the pedestrian, the vehicle drove away and reportedly crashed into another car in Sisters Avenue.

The driver of this car was not seriously injured.

Two teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated taking and driving away.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “One - aged 16 - was taken into custody at a south London police station but later taken to a south London hospital.

“He has since been discharged and taken into custody at a south London police station.

“The other - aged 17 - was taken to a south London hospital. He was later discharged and has been taken into custody at a south London police station.”

The Directorate of Professional Standards was informed and the incident referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The IPCC are now independently investigating the incident.
