Wandsworth Borough is to have 41 charging points installed at 13 new sites in the wake of the Government’s £3billion clean air strategy announced this week.
The move includes banning the sale of new diesel and petrol cars from 2040.
This round of charging points, which each have their own parking space, are expected to be installed by mid-September, and subject to consultations, joined by another 60 at 20 more proposed locations.
Environment spokesman Councillor Jonathan Cook said: “We are making it easier for our residents to switch to more environmentally friendly motoring.
“We are providing the infrastructure that’s needed to make owning an electric vehicle a viable option.
“Within a few months there will be more than 100 charging points across the borough and we are looking beyond this to extend the infrastructure even further.
“This is the future of motoring and we intend to play our part in making it happen.”
Cars or vans that use the parking spaces when not being powered up will be penalised.
