Wandsworth residents are invited to an event part of a consultation being launched to hear proposals on the public accessing police services.

Set up by the Mayoral Office of Policing and Crime (MOPAC) it will allow you to hear suggestions for Wandsworth borough police and to ask questions of the borough commander and other representatives.

It is meant to be a borough-wide meeting that will be in addition to the consultation taking place through smaller neighbourhood-based events.

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) is said to be a large and complex organisation which is currently undergoing transformation, with 12 change programmes said to be in place.

One of them relates to public access.

One of the 11 other change programmes relates to the MPS estate, which links to provision of front counters and public access.

Currently Wandsworth has one 24/7 front counter at Lavender Hill Police Station, which is also a safer neighbourhood team base for Battersea sector.

The consultation on September 14 will provide an opportunity to explain the proposal to relocate the Lavender Hill 24/7 front counter within the same area.

Part of the rational for this is said to concern another change programme, ‘Improving Public Access and First Contact’, which will be explained at the evening.

Peter Laverick, detective chief superintendent for Wandsworth, said: “At this point I want to stress there is no change to the number of police officers or senior police officers who currently serve on Wandsworth Borough.

“There are two pathfinder areas within the MPS where proposed merger of boroughs is being tested. Evaluation of the pathfinders is due to take place during October.

“It is anticipated that the proposal for all MPS boroughs will then be finalised and shared with councils, partners and the public.”

He added: “In the meantime it makes sense that Wandsworth prepares for other organisational change currently underway to ensure a smooth transition with the least disruption to the communities we serve.

“We therefore need to change some of the roles and responsibilities within the management team to facilitate change whilst we deal with day to day business.”

The event will take place at Wandsworth Town Hall Council Chamber, between 4.30 pm and 7.30 pm.
