Thirty daring individuals took the lift to the 13th floor and abseiled 150 feet from St George’s Hospital last week, all in the name of charity.

Last Saturday (September 16) was said to be ‘filled with emotions of nervousness, excitement, and a sense of accomplishment’ for those who took part.

Money was being raised for several different wards, departments and appeals at St George’s in Tooting.

Jacqueline Smith, haematology nurse at St George’s, was one of the first people to take part, and decided to participate after her mother recently passed away.

She said: “St George’s means a lot to me on a personal and professional level. The abseil was great fun and excellent opportunity to support the hospital, and achieve another tick off my bucket list."

Kate and Edgar Barros, from Permanex Plumbing, also took part and raised more than £2,000.

They said: “We have had numerous trips and overnight stays in the paediatric A&E at St Georges over the last three years, which is why all money we raise will be donated to that department and in turn help other families like ours in the future through great staff, training and facilities."

Mari-Louise White, community and events fundraising manager for St George’s Hospital Charity, said: “A huge thank you to all of our supporters who took on this incredible challenge. It’s down to the generosity of our supporters that we are able to continue raising vital funds which will have a real impact on both patients and staff.”
