A street sweeper has been keeping the streets of Battersea clean for nearly 20 years, and says he is ‘incredibly proud’ to do his job.

Kenneth Chambers, one of the borough’s 91 street cleaners, starts at 6am by sweeping materials for the day with his cart, waste bags and a broom.

Then he gets his materials and does a loop of Battersea, focusing on the streets off St John’s Hill.

When Kenneth is done, puts the litter in a green waste bag which is then collected by one of his colleagues who drives a waste van.

He said: “I am proud of what I do because I live in the area too so it’s important for me to keep my streets clean.

“Residents know me in the area and I often receive positive feedback from local people.”

The street cleaning team work together in order to clean the streets and collect fly-tips by working seven days a week in rotating shifts, meaning there is always someone on the roads.

They spend their shifts cleaning six miles of streets daily with main town centres being cleaned up to five times a day.
