A talented Putney schoolgirl has been chosen to represent England in a European dance competition.

Putney High School’s Aimee Armstrong will join all-style dance group Coco Jam in the United Dance Nation’s Lithuanian Cup on November 23 and 25, and could even go on to a world championships stage.

Aimee, 14, dreams of becoming a backing dancer for some of her favourite artists, some of whom include Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Justin Bieber to name a few, and even create her own troupe.

She said: “I feel extremely honoured to be representing my country and am extremely grateful for the opportunity to dance amongst such talented performers.

“It is something I have dreamed of doing since I started dancing and now that this is a reality I am extremely thankful and excited.

“I have worked extremely hard to get here, doing late night rehearsals with my dance crew on multiple days during the week, and I also train by taking classes to improve my performance and choreography skills.

“However, it never feels like a chore as dance is how I enjoy and chose to spend my free time.”

Asked about where she draws her inspiration from, she said: “I get my inspiration from many places including famous dancers such as Matt Steffanina and Parris Goebel, and performers such as Michael Jackson and Beyoncé.

“I also get a lot of inspiration from dancers and teachers around me who achieve so much and work hard every day.”

Aimee said some of her ‘favourite and most treasured’ moments include performing at the Royal Albert Hall on her birthday at one of London’s biggest dance stages Move It with her crew at Flawless Dance School, performing the opening act for the West End production Mad Hatters Tea Party, and winning first place overall with her crew Coco Jam in the national championships.

She added: “However, my best memory was dancing in a Sony advert with some of my friends as it was such an enjoyable experience and it taught me so much about life on set.”

Aimee mainly trains in street dance, which involves a collaboration of other techniques which include hip hop, house, popping, locking, krump and breaking.

She also trained in ballet when she was younger as a trophy-winning Irish dancer.

Suzie Longstaff, headmistress at Putney High School, said: “I am thrilled to see that Aimee has been selected to dance for England at the European championships, the Lithuania Cup 2017, in November.

“This is an amazing opportunity for her and we are all looking forward to seeing how she gets on.”
