Almost 16,000 lightbulbs in street lamps across Wandsworth are set to be replaced with new, energy-efficient LED lighting.

The lights use approximately 50 percent less energy, have lower running costs and should last an average 25 years compared to the six-year lifespan for traditional bulbs.

LED lights are said to be designed to produce similar lighting levels to existing bulbs, but are able to be dimmed on roads while still producing enough light to ensure road safety.

The replacement programme will cost £4.3 million according to Wandsworth Council, however it will cut £400,000 per year off its electricity bill plus savings in bulb replacement costs.

More than £11 million is expected to be saved.

Following a successful trial last year, the project’s timeline is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

Councillor Jonathan Cook, spokesperson for community services, said: “This project will deliver savings for our council tax payers, reduce our carbon footprint and deliver better lighting, so it’s win-win.

“We feel the time is right for this project because LED technology has come on in leaps and bounds recently. We’re confident our new street lights will be cost-effective while keeping our roads safe and well-lit.”
