More than 1,150 new trees will be planted across the borough in the coming months, Wandsworth Council has confirmed.

Streets, parks and housing estates will get 677 new trees this winter, and 512 will be planted in residential areas.

The council says at least 500 more street trees will be planted next year and it is expected that the number of street trees will increase to nearly 17,000 by next year.

Species include London plane, cherry lime, pear, crab apple, rowan, oak, hazel, whitebeam and more.

Cllr Jonathan Cook, the council’s environmental spokesman, said: “We are seeing a big expansion in tree planting across the whole borough. Many residential areas will benefit from this welcome extra greenery.

“As well as making our residential areas look much more attractive, the trees will also offer great habitats for birds, bees and other forms of wildlife.

“Wandsworth already has a well-deserved reputation for being one of London’s greenest boroughs. Planting this many new trees demonstrates our commitment to making our borough an even better place to live.”

Cllr Fleur Anderson, Labour’s community services spokeswoman, said: “I wholeheartedly support Mayor [of London] Sadiq Khan’s plan to fund the planting of an extra 40,000 trees in London.

“Wandsworth could use this money to plant more trees than they are now proposing, to replace the many missing trees on our streets across the borough.

“Protecting existing trees in our amazing parks and commons is also vital for air quality and health.

"Sadly the Tory council also has a poor track record on this. It recently felled 51 mature chestnut trees on Tooting Common and residents close to Battersea Park will recall the damage caused there by the Tories' decision to use it as a motor racing track."
