A Wandsworth nursery school has been given an overall rating as 'inadequate' following an inspection which revealed staff didn't always know children's names.

Carmena Christian Day Nursery, in Thrale Road, was visited by an inspector from the government's education watchdog Ofsted, who said in a report: "Arrangements for settling new children are not robust. For instance, staff do not always know vital information, such as children's names, which significantly limits their ability to support them when they first start at the setting."

The nursery, which has 15 staff and 58 children on its roll, was rated as 'inadequate' in two out of four areas, which were 'effectiveness of the leadership and management,"'and 'personal development, behaviour and welfare.'

Ofsted inspector Jane Morgan stated in her report that, following 'an allegation,' staff did not notify Ofsted or the local council, as required, and that this put children's welfare at risk, however she did not expand upon the nature of the allegation.

Positive aspects of the nursery, as outlined in Ms Morgan's report, included: “Children are confident to try new experiences, as they feel safe. For example, children of all ages steadily and confidently negotiate the steep slope outdoors.

“Staff give children clear messages about the importance of healthy eating. For example, staff talk to children during meal times, to explain about healthy foods that give them energy.”

The inspector also noted that the quality of teaching and learning was 'consistently strong' and that staff had a secure knowledge and understanding of how to promote the learning and development of children.

She also stated: "The management team and staff build positive relationships with parents. Staff regularly share information with parents to support their children's learning and development."

The nursery was rated as 'good' in the two other areas which were 'quality of teaching, learning and assessment' and 'outcomes for children.'
