A Tooting school's class has hit back at a survey which rates Wandsworth as one of London's unfriendliest boroughs.

Year 6 pupils at Fircroft Primary School, in Fircroft Road, were 'shocked, surprised and frustrated’ to find that people might find the area to be ‘unwelcoming’, ‘unfriendly’ and ‘snooty’ following a survey by Vivo Property Buyers.

Wandsworth was last for ‘safety and spirit’, at 42, with residents asked apparently saying there are ‘too many snooty people in the area’ and that children are ‘in general badly behaved’.

In the letter, pupils gave their opinion on why they disagree.

Mena said: "When I am walking to school lots of people, who may be walking their dogs or commuting to work, [they] always greet me with a smile, a wave or a friendly hello.”

Khia also said: "I go shopping with my granny in Tooting a lot and the local shops are always busy, especially when we go to pay at the counter.”

Saskia added: "My neighbours kindly offered to keep me company when I walked to school because my friend wasn’t there. They wanted me to be safe."

The class said disagrees with the ranking because it believes Wandsworth has many friendly people who greet them with a smile or a kind word.

There was also disagreement about safety, citing events such as Battersea Park’s Guy Fawkes bonfire, fun fairs and other activities, adding to the ‘special, unique spirit’ of the borough.

It added: “We don’t think children are ‘in general badly behaved’. We agree that some children might be badly behaved sometimes but nobody is perfect.

“We like to do things for other people and we try to be nice to people by letting them pass through doors and saying please and thank you to people.”

Wandsworth was ranked ninth out of the 32 boroughs, with neighbouring boroughs Richmond and Lambeth coming fourth and seventh respectively.
