Wandsworth Council has unveiled plans to upgrade sports facilities on 12-acres of public playing fields by handing over the lease to a private company who will carry out the investment.

Plans for Roehampton Playing Fields, in Dover House Road, include a new full-size all-weather pitch with new lighting and a spectator’s area - as well as a new pavilion with changing rooms and a new café with a children’s soft play area.

The investment would be carried by TFC Leisure Ltd, a company which already runs other grassroots sports sites in south west and west London, in return for a 30-year lease of the site.

Cllr Jonathan Cook, cabinet member for community services, said: "Local community groups, sports clubs and schools will be able to enjoy much better playing facilities along with modernised changing rooms and all the existing users will have their rights and fees protected.

"In addition, a whole range of new sports would be available for the first time, while the introduction of an all-weather pitch means that people of all ages will be able to take part in team sports and health and fitness activities whatever the weather.”

The plans also include five tennis courts, four netball courts, junior hockey and lacrosse training areas, and space for tag rugby, kwik, junior and senior cricket and school PE lessons.

Cllr Peter Carpenter, ward representative for Roehampton and Putney Heath, said: “While we welcome the proposed improvements to Roehampton Playing Fields, we want to ensure that any new operator of Roehampton Playing Fields fully protects the long-term interests of existing users and local residents.”
