Wandsworth is one of the top places to live in England when it comes to social mobility for people from disadvantaged backgrounds, new figures reveal.
The figures, published by the Social Mobility Commission in its annual State of the Nation report, assessed 16 indicators for every major life stage - from early years through to working lives - and found Wandsworth borough was ranked fourth in a list of 324 local authorities,
Wandsworth Council’s leader, Cllr Ravi Govindia, said the council would continue to make progress, including through its Aspirations Programme through which it helps residents achieve their full potential.
He said: “We are providing good quality homes, including for those on the lowest incomes, we have superb early years services for children and are overseeing some of the best and highest performing state schools in the country, while at the same time helping people find employment in places like Nine Elms where the area’s regeneration has created thousands of jobs specifically aimed at local people."
Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, and Tower Hamlets made up the top three councils, while Havering (157th), Barking and Dagenham (114th), and Hillingdon (71st) were judged as the capital’s lowest-rated three.
